Uncle Hil

I’m finding it hard to believe he has gone. I just can’t accept it and then I remember with a jolt.

Uncle Hill was many things, but to me above all, he was kind and precise, consistent and very funny. His responses were always positive and his sage advice has guided me through tough times. Judy and he were a crack team of humour, generosity, warmth and support. I imagine them sitting together again, and then it feels better.

Perhaps this is why it I cannot accept he has moved on. Because moving on is just not consistent at all. I will miss him greatly.

There was a lighthouse
Bold and mighty
Shining brightly
To the sea
To the land
And to the sky
On a cliff

The cliff high and chalky
And crumbling, eroding
To the touch of the cold sea
Shifting
And with tides
That wash in and
Wash out

And there was an attempt
To stop the coastal erosion
To hold back the tide
And this failed

And there was a campaign to
Move the lighthouse
To preserve the light
And the heritage
And this failed

And the lighthouse was lost

But the lighthouse
Still bold and mighty
Still shining brightly
Will always be remembered
By the people that loved it
So dearly

And the sea is not as scary
And the night is not as dark
Because the shining light
That shone so brightly once
Still
Shines brightly
In our hearts
